Room 213 News

We read some stories about St. Patrick’s Day and did a couple of fun activities.

We started a unit on Eric Carle.  We read many of his books.  We made our own version of Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?.

We are learning the letter Tt and the sound that it makes.   We looked at pictures of a turtle, a toothbrush, the number two (2), and a telephone.   They all begin with the letter Tt.   We also did many activities to learn about this letter and its sound.  Please work on this with your child at home.

Reminders

I asked for you to send in a spiral notebook.   This notebook will be used as a means of communication between us.  Each day I will write a sentence and draw a picture of something that your child has done during the school day.  In return, I ask that you also write a sentence and draw a picture of something your child has done at home that night.  We read it together and talk about it in class the next day. This back and forth writing is not only a valuable tool for keeping in close contact with each other, but it will also encourage your child to take notice of print and promote their literacy skills.

If your child is absent from school, please remember to send a note with your child upon their return.

We are continuing our unit on the Five Senses.   We learned about the sense of smell and taste.  We did some fun activities related to them.

We are learning the letter Tt and the sound that it makes.   We looked at pictures of a .   They all begin with the letter Tt.   We also did many activities to learn about this letter and its sound.  Please work on this with your child at home.

Room 213 News

 

We celebrated Dr. Seuss’s birthday by reading the story, The Cat in the Hat.   The students all made their own hats. We also did a fun patterning activity.

Room 213 News

 

We continued our unit on dental health.  We talked about how important it is to brush our teeth at least twice a day.   We learned that cavities are caused by not brushing the sugar and food off of our teeth.

We also talked about the types of foods that we should eat to keep our teeth healthy.  We looked at various pictures (candy, cookies, milk, an apple, an orange, ice cream) and put them in the correct column:  Healthy Foods or Not Healthy Foods.   We made a tooth puppet too.

Room 213 News

 

We learned about President George Washington and President Abraham Lincoln.  We read stories about them.

We started a unit on dental health.   We made patterns using a toothbrush, toothpaste and a tooth.   We read several books and learned some fingerplays, songs and poems.   We talked about how to keep our teeth healthy.   The students needed to put various pictures (dental floss, a carrot, cheese, an apple, candy, a toothbrush, toothpaste) in the correct column:  Foods or Tools.  We also made a tooth fairy book.

We finished our unit on penguins.    We made a list of what we already know about them.   They are black and white.   They eat fish.  They swim.  They slide.  The penguins do not fly.  They live where it is cold.   The students made a book about them.   We also did a fun art project.   We talked about Valentine’s Day.  We did some graphing and patterning related to it.

We finished our unit on winter.   We did a fun art project about it.  We started talking about penguins.  We read some books and learned some fingerplays and poems.  We also made AB, AAB, ABB, or ABC patterns.   We also worked on recognizing and writing numbers and letters.

We are learning the letter Qq and the sound that it makes.   We looked at pictures of a quilt, a queen, a quarter and a question mark.  They all begin with the letter Qq.   We also did many activities to learn about this letter and its sound.  Please work on this with your child at home.

We are continuing with our unit on winter.   We read the story, Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See?  by Eric Carle.  We then made our own version, which is titled Snowman, Snowman What Do You See?  The students really enjoyed making one themselves.   We talked about Groundhog Day.  We did a fun project about it.

We are learning the letter Pp and the sound that it makes.   We looked at pictures of a pumpkin, penguins, pancakes, and popcorn.  They all begin with the letter Pp.   We also did many activities to learn about this letter and its sound.  Please work on this with your child at home.

We are continuing to learn about winter.   We read the story, The Mitten by Jan Brett.  We sequenced the animals that found their way into the mitten.  We also made our very own mitten and put the animals inside.  We did a fun art project too.

We are learning the letter Oo and the sound that it makes.   We looked at pictures of an orange, an owl, an onion and an otter.  They all begin with the letter Oo.   We also did many activities to learn about this letter and its sound.  Please work on this with your child at home.

We are continuing our winter unit.   We patterned various articles of clothing that are worn during the winter.   We listened to the poem, Snowmen by Gail Aemmer.   We made finger puppets to along with it.   We also made a snowflake art project.

We learned some songs, fingerplays and poems about the New Year.   We also decorated our own crowns to celebrate and welcome 2014!   We started a unit on winter.   We will be reading many books and doing fun projects to learn about it.
