We finished our unit on farm animals.   We made a list of animals that we might see on a farm.   We then worked on a paper where we had to write the animals and draw pictures of them.

We reviewed the book, The Cat in the Hat, for our field trip.  We had Rhyming Fun with _at Words.   We reviewed what rhyming words are.  We went through the alphabet and put the letters at the beginning of the  __at word to see if it made sense.  If it did, we left it there.  If it did not, we moved on to the next letter.  When we went from a to z, we were then able to pick our 5 favorites and write them onto the hat.

We are beginning a unit on community workers.  We made a list of the ones that we know.   Some of them are:   ambulance driver, fireman, policeman, doctor, nurse, construction worker, waiter, waitress, teacher, mailman.   We talked about the job that a doctor has and some of the tools that he/she uses.  They are a stethoscope, a blood pressure cuff, a tongue depressor, a thermometer, an otoscope, a percussion hammer, an ophthalmoscope.   We talked about the purpose of each one and why it is important.   We also did some role playing with the tools so we understood what was being used.   Then we made our very own doctor’s bag and put the pictures of the tools inside.

We had a great time on our field trip to the Children’s Farm.   We saw rabbits, horses, goats, sheep, cows, roosters, ducks.   We were able to touch most of the animals too!   We also went on a hay ride.  We had so much fun and the weather was perfect!

We talked about the animals that we saw at the farm and made a list.  Then we wrote the sentence and filled in the blanks:   At the farm, I saw ____ and ____.  Then we drew a picture to match.

We worked on positional words.    We reviewed the different phrases that would be used in the story so the students would be familiar with them when they were read.   We cut out the farmer and attached him to a popsicle stick.  We wanted him to be able to move where the farmer was searching.   Then we read the book, Where is the Cow?   The students followed along as I read the story.   The farmer looked all over for the cow (behind the barn, on top of the barn, under the barn, next to the barn and inside the barn).  He finally found him!

We did a fun math activity.   It was called Math on the Farm.  The students were given a number of cows to put in the yard and a number of horses to put in the barn.   Then they needed to count all of them together.  This gave us the total amount of animals on the farm.   We worked on counting, writing numbers and beginning addition.

We made pigs to go along with our farm unit.  They turned out cute!

We are continuing to work on identifying upper and lower case letters of the alphabet and their sounds.   We are learning to write the letters correctly.   We are reviewing the color words.   Please practice this at home.

In math, the younger children are recognizing numbers to 20 and learning to count to 20.  The older children are recognizing numbers to 100 and learning to count to 100.   We are also writing the numbers.   We are counting by 5’s and 10’s to 100.  Next will be counting by 2’s to 100.  We learned to tell time to the hour and half hour.  Please practice this at home.  This week we will begin our money unit.  We will be learning to recognize the penny and identify the value of it.   Please practice this at home.

We can recognize our last names.   We are learning to write them correctly.   Please practice this at home by having your child write a capital letter at the beginning of their last name and then using lower case letters for the rest of their name.

We have been learning to tie our shoes.  Please practice this at home.

We read stories and learned songs, fingerplays, and poems about spring.   We talked about different types of weather that happen:  sun, wind, rain, clouds, etc.   We made kites.  We learned that in order for them to fly successfully, it needs to be windy outside.

We were able to create our own bugs.  We decided how many eyes, wings and legs we wanted them to have.

One of the stories we read was The Carrot Seed by Ruth Krauss.   The students colored, cut, and glued the life cycle of a carrot seed pictures in order on a carrot pattern.

The students completed another carrot seed sequencing paper.  They looked at four pictures:  carrots, a rake with dirt, a package of carrot seeds, and a pail of water.  They needed to figure out the correct order to put them in.
