February 22, 2013 Newsletter

Room 106 News

 

We started out talking about George Washington.  We learned that he liked to ride horses.  His favorite subject was math.   He was elected the first president of the United States of America.  His face is on the one dollar bill and on the quarter.     George Washington was called the “Father of Our Country.”

We are beginning a unit on Dental Health.    We read several different books and learned some songs, fingerplays and poems.   We made headbands.  We talked about tools that are used to help clean your teeth and keep them healthy and different foods that we eat.

We had a sixth grade student come and read a book to us for Black History month.  It was called,      I Like You But I Love Me by Common.

Winter is upon us.  The snow is falling around the Chicago area.  Please send snowpants for your child to wear during Brain Boost.

If your child is absent from school, please remember to send a note with your child upon their return.

Please check the folder and back pack every night and take out the completed work.  Please send the folder to school every day. 

Supplies

We are getting really low on our snack supply.  Please send in some healthy snacks.

We could use some table wipes and disinfectant spray.

Room 106 News

We started the week talking about Abraham Lincoln.  We read a book about his life.   In it, we learned that he grew up in a log cabin.   He loved to read and learn from any books he could get his hands on.   He studied law.   He was the 16th President of the United States.

We continued our unit on Valentine’s Day.   We graphed candy hearts.  First we sorted them by color.  Second we put them on the graph and counted them.  Third we wrote the number of hearts for each color.  The kids had a great time with this activity!

We had our Valentine’s Day party.  The kids had fun passing out their valentines and candy to their friends.  And of course eating the treats that were brought in!  Thank you so much to the parents for sending in all of the wonderful candy and cupcakes for the students to enjoy.

Room 106 News

Groundhog Day was on February 2.  We learned that a groundhog is also known as a woodchuck.   We saw a picture of one.  We read a story and listened to some poems and nursery rhymes.  We learned that he did not see his shadow, which means an early spring.   We talked about shadows and how they are formed.

We started our unit on Valentine’s Day.   We patterned headbands using different colored hearts.  We also did an art project and made butterflies.   Many of its parts are hearts.

Our Parker Buddies came back to visit.    They went to gym with us!

On Thursday, February 14, we will be having a Valentine’s Day party.  You may send treats and valentines for your child to share with his/her friends.   There are six children in the room:  Sachi, Taylier, Alex, Tristen, Vivica and Isaac.  Please have the valentines filled out before bringing them to school.
