We are continuing our penguin unit.  We read several different books and learned some songs, fingerplays and poems.   We learned that penguins are birds that cannot fly, but they swim very well and spend most of their lives in the sea.  There are 17 species of penguins.   The penguins eat in the ocean.   They eat fish, crustaceans (like crab, lobster, shrimp, krill) and squid.   We also learned that the Father Emperor Penguin takes care of the egg on his feet.  He cuddles it against his fat body, where the egg is safe and warm.   So we pretended that we are the Daddy penguin and we are taking care of the egg.

This week we learned about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.   We discussed his dream  of peace and love among all people.  We  made mobiles representing Dr. King’s message.   We are beginning a unit on penguins.  We read several different books and learned some songs, fingerplays and poems.   We listed things that we already know about penguins.   We made penguins and put them on the bulletin board outside our classroom.      We also did a counting activity.   (We looked at the penguins with the numbers 1-10 and put the correct “pieces of ice” on them.)

We also had music this week too.

We are continuing to talk about Winter this week.     We read several different books and learned some songs, fingerplays and poems.     One of the books was The Mitten by Jan Brett.   We discussed the animals in the story and why they went into the mitten.  We also talked about the mitten getting bigger.   We did an activity where we made our own mitten and put the animals inside.   We made a graph of our favorite color.  We looked at it and figured out which color had the smallest number and which one had the biggest number of children choosing it.   We completed a paper where we had to read the color word and then color the space using the correct crayon.   We made snowmen and put them on our bulletin board.

The Parker Buddies came to visit.   They joined us in music.   We had fun together!

We have had a great first week of 2013!  We are talking about Winter (even though there is no snow yet).  We read several different books and learned some songs, fingerplays and poems.  We talked about what happens in winter.  We listed fun activities that we can do and that the weather  becomes cold outside.    Then we reviewed what we need to wear during this time of year.  We also practiced getting dressed.  We talked about putting on your coat  first, then your hat, scarf and your gloves last.  We also listened to a fingerplay about Snowmen and made snowmen finger puppets to go along with it.   We completed an activity where we sequenced making a snowman.   The students made their own snowman on ice skates.
